Volunteer Spotlight | Peter Clark

In our latest interview, we had the privilege of speaking with Peter Clark, a dedicated volunteer whose background in education and commitment to community well-being have made him an invaluable part of the CIUW team. His passion for stabilizing families and creating measurable impact aligns perfectly with the organization's mission. In this interview, he shares what motivates him to volunteer, how he feels connected to CIUW's work, and why others should consider getting involved. Read on to discover Peter's insights into the power of focused community impact and the importance of volunteering.

How do you feel the Cape & Islands United Way is unique in its approach to community impact?

The United Way focuses Community Impact funds by selecting grant programs that align firmly with strategies and outcomes of strong benefit to the Cape and Islands. Also, the grants are focused on measurable benefits for their participants. Community Impact grant funds may be used for established programs and also to support new ideas to improve the lives of those needing support. Finally, besides the larger, annual grants, CIUW has several other channels for funding smaller and more immediate needs.

What motivated you to become a volunteer?

I joined because the Cape and Islands United Way was making the transition to more focused and results-based granting. As the retired Falmouth superintendent of schools, I had been part of focusing teaching more effectively by "planning backwards" from desired and measurable results to the activities and materials needed to get those results.

In what ways do you feel personally connected to CIUW's mission?

During my years in public education, I clearly saw the negative impacts for children's learning when families are thrown into turmoil by life forces and the kids are struggling to feel secure. United Way focuses on stabilizing family lives by improving housing stability, promoting health, improving educational success, and encouraging economic stability.

What would you say to others who are considering volunteering with CIUW?

The mission is powerful and motivates the organization; staff members are supportive; and other volunteers are committed to raising and distributing funds in the most productive way possible. Volunteers play significant roles in the success of CIUW.
