Community Baby Shower Serves New and Expectant Parents Experiencing Economic Hardship

Updated: Jan 21, 2020

Later this month, 50 new and expectant families in our community will receive supplies and resources to help them raise healthy, happy babies.

In the spirit of a traditional baby shower, the Community Baby Shower on April 28th will be a celebration. The event also serves to give low income families a stronger start to parenthood. New and expectant families will have access to maternal and early childhood supports, and will go home with baby essentials such as diapers, wipes and clothing.

Donations have been made by individuals and businesses in our community, and the support has been outstanding. In addition to filling donation boxes at several local business including Starbucks, RPM Carpets, CapeSpace and Premier Auto dealerships, substantial donations have been made by individuals and businesses to support the event. This includes several strollers, a crib and glider from Cardi's Furniture, and a donation from A Baby Center of 50 car seats made possible by a grant from The Hyannis Rotary worth $4,900. In addition, A Baby Center is donating more than $1,000 worth of diapers.

Another drop off site for 2019 is the Yarmouth Police Department, and Deputy Chief Xiarhos and his team have gone above and beyond. Xiarhos has organized a group of motorcyclists (who participate in the annual Nick’s Ride for the Fallen) to deliver the donations personally. This Sunday April 7th at 11 AM, the bikers will ride to the Cape and Islands United Way’s offices on Falmouth Road in Centerville with their packages and a financial donation.

The Community Baby Shower is supported in part by the Cape and Islands United Way, the Premier Companies, Cape Cod Healthcare, and Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank.
